Michael Lacey speaks out on Joe Arpaio pardon

Joe Arpaio is one of the most notorious Sheriffs in the history of the United States. His term in office was marked by some grave violations of human rights as well as misuse of office. According to investigations that were carried out by two journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, Joe Arpaio committed crimes against humanity, especially to the Latino Immigrants. He also used his office to settle political scores with those in politics. For instance, he was the one who launched investigations in former President Barrack Obama birth certificate. He insisted it was forgery a case where many agree that he was being used by one political side to help them get political mirage.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin also exposed Joe Arpaio for investigating a presiding judge in a case he had against Melendres, a Latino victim of his discrimination. Thy continued to show that this was not the first case that involved Joe Arpaio committing such an act. Joe Arpaio used his office to take a stab at those who were investigating him, an action which amounted to misuse of office.

In 2007, Joe Arpaio had gone to another extent of committing actions that were disgusting and clear indication of racial profiling. He ordered his juniors to go around the county looking for Latinos to determine if they were legally in the United States. Anyone who was found to have been living in the country illegally was deported. Joe acted as if he was the law himself.

Micahel Lacey and Jim Larkin were the owners of the Phoenix New Times, the media outlet that exposed the actions of Arpaio. Due to the continued criticism of the Arpaio administration, he had banned them from his press conferences as well as denying them access to county records. He even went ahead and threatened the reporters of the media with arrest if they continued writing stories about him.

In October 2007, Joe Arpaio made good his threats when he arrested Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin for writing about his investigation on a judge in a court case involving him and Melendres. According to Lacey, the Phoenix New Times was a thorn in his administration. They persistently followed his action and never stooped exposing his illegal actions. Lacey adds that on the day of their arrest, they were arrested by plainclothes detectives in the middle of the night in a manner comparable to the third-world style.

Ten years later, Joe Arpaio is back on the headlines. President Trump has given him a pardon which have been approved by a U.S District magistrate court. Such action according to Lacey is a clear indication of how flawed the justice system is in the country. For a man who committed acts of grave human injustices to be left free without sentencing, this has to be the joke of the century. Joe was behind torture and even deaths of many immigrants in the state of Arizona. For Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin who spent years investigating him, this action was not wrong, and the trump’s administration has proved that it cannot be relied upon to stop racial profiling in the United States.

A Look At The Leaders Of Front Page Confidential

The Frontera Fund was started by two journalists, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, who won in a lawsuit versus Maricopa County. The judgment was for $3.75 million which was all donated to this fund. The fund dispenses money to nonprofits and civil rights organizations across Arizona where it is primarily used to help Latino people who face discrimination. The reason for the lawsuit was that they were illegally arrested by Sheriff Joe Arpaio about 11 years ago when they were using their first amendment free speech rights against him. Their arrest sparked a national outrage but it was really just the latest example of Sheriff Joe Arpaio regularly abusing the human and civil rights of people in that county over the past 20 years. The money has undid some of his damage against the Latino community but much more work is to be done.
