These days “organic” refers to more than just crops grown without the use of chemicals and pesticides.  It also refers to your “natural” search engine ranking – as in, where your site is ranked without using any pay-per-click advertising. 

Organic search engine results are helped by “backlinks” which, just like it sounds, are links from other people pointing back to your site. 

The more informative and relevant the site that links to yours is, the higher your own search engine ranking will become.  Obviously a site about cars linking to a site about gardening isn’t relevant, so it won’t help (and could even harm) your hard-earned search engine ranking.
