Marketing Rant: When Free Really Isn’t!

Everyone loves free stuff – especially when it comes to building your business online.  If you’re just starting an online business, you’re naturally looking to spend as little as possible.  This might involve searching for things like free software, free hosting and free web design.  No matter how good the offer sounds though, there is often a catch – even to the point where it could damage your computer.

1. Free Software – Some software is necessary to run your online business.  But when you’re installing it, you may find that the necessary program installs unnecessary junk on your computer.  A common culprit is free spyware removers or free firewall tools.  They claim to uninstall spyware, block ads and pop-up windows, but once installed – they compound the problem by adding their own scumware which slows down your computer even more!

Tip:  Only download programs from reputable sources like download.com.  These programs are tested and authorized spyware-free.  Never download a program that comes up and looks like an error from your computer screen.  Avoid sites altogether which display this kind of advertising.  A good free firewall can be had at www.comodo.com.

2. Free Web Hosting – Free web hosting sounds like a great way to save $120 or more on your business expenses.  But with that hosting there is almost always a catch:  banner ads appearing all over your page, limited space or bandwidth (how many visitors can access your site).  Ask yourself, do you really want those limitations?  Some “free” web hosts ban commercial sites from even operating.

Tip: Web hosting can be had now for cheap – usually around $5 per month can get your started with a plan that will grow with your business instead of restrict it.  There are lots of web host review sites around that can help you make an informed decision.

3. Free Web Design – The design of your website is crucial to ensuring your business’ success or failure.  Your website can look professional and polished, or can scream “AMATEUR!” to your potential visitors.  It’s tempting to try and save money with a free website, but it can hurt your business’ credibility in the long run.

Tip:  Web design doesn’t have to be expensive – especially when you’re just starting out.  Find out what your options are by reading these Web Design Tips on choosing a web designer.

Good luck!
