What to Know Before You Buy that Hot New Gadget or Gizmo

By Tom Polanski

If you’ve been on the internet for any length of time, you’ll quickly learn that there’s a LOT of neat stuff out there.  iPods and iPhones, An MP3 player inside a pen, or even a Blackberry or Palm to store your information and keep appointments are all examples of the latest and greatest must-have gadgets to keep you organized and on schedule.

But what do you do with all that…stuff?  How do you know if you really need that gadget or if it’s just a passing fad?  One way is to use the Internet (also once declared to be just a passing fad!) to research before you buy.  But what, exactly do you look for?

Chances are, when looking for a gadget for yourself or as a gift for someone else, you can find many different places selling the same things - which gives you the perfect opportunity to shop around for the best deals.  Whether it’s a laptop, video game, cell phone or camera, you can often comparison shop at different sites online such as nextag.com, shopzilla.com and pricegrabber.com

Oftentimes, good gadget websites will let you expand or narrow down your choices depending on the features you want.  You can shop by price, brand, size and even color.  Narrowing your focus makes it easy to help you find that perfect item at a price you’re willing to pay.

Don’t forget to do your research on the company making the item as well.  What do customers have to say about them and their products?  Sites like epinions.com give real, unbiased reviews from customers just like you. Review sites help you learn from others’ mistakes or successes and help you make an accurate, informed decision on what you should buy.

In the end, trying to look through the hype and fluff of all the latest product features, and digging a little deeper to comparison shop, narrow or expand your focus and read customer reviews and real testimonials will go a long way in helping you buy the perfect gift - for yourself or someone else.

Taking just a little extra time to do your homework will ensure that you are pleased with your purchase for years to come.  Good luck in your search!
