Companies like Tempus, a firm that aims to transform the way cancer care is delivered, are doing their best to assist the nearly 40 percent of adults within the United States who will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Initially, the company did not have access to clinical or medical data, which rendered the platform they had developed to analyze a patient’s clinical and molecular data unusable. This is just one of the many obstacles the company faced in their upward battle in the medical field.
Today, much of the information gathered about a patient comes in the form of notes taken by their physician. Tempus developed an application that is capable of recognizing handwritten characters and transforming them into data with the help of natural language processing built into the software as well. These documents could then be compiled into files and data that could be used to advance cancer treatment.
The ultimate goal for Tempus is to pair clinical information about patients with molecular information taken through genome sequencing. This could potentially help researchers peel back many layers when it comes to combating cancer-like diseases in the future.
A co-founder of Tempus, Eric Paul Lefkofsky is also a co-founder and chairman of Groupon, co-founder of Echo Global Logistics, InnerWorkings, Mediaocean, and Uptake. Lefkofsky is a law school graduate who shortly after created a company called Starbelly. Before co-founding Tempus, Lefkofsky held the position of chief executive officer of Groupon, but stepped down to pursue his efforts with Tempus. He still maintains his position of chairman with Groupon.
In addition to his entrepreneurial efforts, Eric Paul Lefkofsky also has philanthropic merits to his name. Along with his wife, Lefkofsky formed a charitable trust called the Lefkofsky Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to support charitable, educational, and scientific organizations and causes around the world. The primary focus of the foundation is on organizations whose primary audience consists of children. He is also a part of The Giving Pledge, which is a campaign that aims to encourage contributions from the wealthy to various philanthropic causes around the world.
