The Bounty Of Ski Season

Winter is the one time of the year that anyone can enjoy the cold and the snow. There are many people that wait for the moment to partake in the winter sport we call skiing. For many, skiing is a winter tradition. Families from all over the country engage in this activity while enjoying the company of other skiing enthusiasts. There are many ways people can enjoy this activity – either by traditional skiing or by snowboarding. Snowboarding is a newer activity and it usually draws the younger crowd but it is equally as fun. While some people may go to ski resorts this upcoming ski season to enjoy the slopes, others will go to enjoy the ski resort itself. Ski resorts are great because they provide guests amazing amenities during their stay. The ski resort is usually the icing on the cake when it comes to the ski season.

The beauty of a ski resort is for total enjoyment. You can gather a few of your friends and head for the hills. Is there any place where you would rather be with a loved one? I can suggest two that comes to mind. The first one is Squaw Valley which was the host of the 1960 winter Olympics. They are one of the largest ski resorts in the United States. Located in Olympic Village , California. Here you can do some fine dining. Indulge in some shopping or just choose to sit by the fireplace and get lost in its glow . The Village of Squaw Valley has a lot to offer. It includes indoor and outdoor activities. You can enjoy the wonder land of the ski resort. You can go off the trail and leave your shoe prints on the fresh fallen snow. There are thirty lifts and more than 175 trails. Then there is Lake Tahoe Casino, if you want to try your luck. This place will definitely take your breath away. At least guarantee to get your pulse racing.
Then just as equal we have Alpine Meadows. Which has approximately 2,400 acres of terrain, 13 lifts and a drop about 1,800 feet. A great feeling for the avid skier. There are different terrains, from beginners to advance. Alpine Meadows has an average of 402 inches of snow fall that’s why they have longest snow season . While you are there, you may be lucky to run into Andy Wirth. He is the CEO of both resorts. He has worked in the hotel industry for 25 years. He has a lot if experience under his belt. He worked with the Steamboat Springs Resort (1986). He held positions as marketing office, executive vice president. As you can see he wore many hats. He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Colorado. After all that, I heard he is a real down to earth guy. So go ahead make a reservation. I bet you will have the time of your life.

The Newark Community Economic Development Corporation Is Attracting New Business To Newark

Economic development is something that it always needed by every city in the country. Businesses come and go and when they leave, they take jobs with them. This means the people in charge of the economic development of the area must always be out there selling their city to new people. If they don’t, they’ll notice a downtrend where no new business open and older ones leave. It happens every day in cities all around the nation. That’s why economic development corporations like the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation are so important for a functioning financial life.

Kevin Seawright is running the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation after his recent appointment. He brings a lot of experience in finance from the various jobs he’s spent working for big city governments on the East Coast. As CFO and Executive Vice President of The Newark CEDC, he’s responsible for all financial matters related to the organization. Crunchbase says that Seawright and the rest of the staff have been tasked by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka to help bring prosperity back to the neighborhoods in the city. That can only be done by attracting new business while keeping the ones who are there happy. Business owners have a large number of concerns about doing business in any city. They want to make sure they have some sort of support system in place.

The Newark CEDC is reaching out to people who want to build businesses in the neighborhoods of Newark. They’re able to help them with many facets of their project, including site selection. Business owners will find it useful to have someone that can help them with demographic information and more. It’s tough opening up a new location, and often the biggest problem is a lack of knowledge. That’s what this organization is in business to help with. They can provide business owners with enough information that they can take decisive and correct action. This type of person to person, ground-level support can help companies establish the type of deep roots they need to make a real difference in a community. That’s the type of relationship that the neighborhood, the city, and the business all need. This helps rebuild areas that are in need of redevelopment in a way that is sustainable and that can bring in more jobs and new residents. Newark is going to grow through these types of efforts as long as they continue to execute.

Pittsburgh Businesswoman, Susan McGalla Sticks to Her Game Plan as a Female Executive

American Consultant and career business woman, Susan McGalla learned early on that being “female” in traditionally male dominated chief executive positions, was a challenge. But, she was clearly prepared to handle the challenges due to her upbringing in East Liverpool, Ohio.

McGalla grew up in a household also filled with male bravado, courtesy of two brothers and a football coach father. Her motivational factor, actually came from her father, who instilled in her the fact that it didn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, just be a strong, focused individual.

As a veteran retail executive, Susan McGalla managed top level decisions for household name brands, American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. and Wet Seal. Being confident in her own abilities made McGalla comfortable as a woman in business operations, this confidence helped propel McGalla to significant positions within successful corporations.

McGalla earned her Bachelor’s of Art Degree from a private liberal arts college in Alliance, Ohio, Mount Union College. After college, McGalla’s employers saw huge potential within her and she managed to capitalize on the possibilities when she was presented with opportunities for career growth.

In 2009, she was recruited as the top talent for American Eagle. Prior to rising to the top position of Chief Executive Officer with American Eagle Outfitters, Inc., Susan actually worked her way through the ranks in a manner which epitomizes her strategy for exceeding expectations.

Obviously, McGalla did not let gender hinder her career growth; she continued to excel in top level positions. Many of her make peers expressed surprise that she was both female and so young. As a successful executive and business woman, McGalla turned her talents to providing instruction to other women aspiring to reach their highest potential. In her consultant capacity, she founded the company, P3 Executive Consulting, LLC. She provides client consults, giving directional advice in regards to brand building, marketing and talent acquisition.

Today, Susan McGalla continues with the challenge of being a female entrepreneur while working as the Director of Strategic Planning and Growth for the Pittsburg Steelers Football Organization front office.

Although, McGalla career success makes her a sought after consultant and public speaker, with the Women and Girl’s Foundation of Pittsburgh and as a Series CEO Speaker for the Carnegie Mellon University, she doesn’t consider herself a barrier breaker. When asked about the possibilities of women achieving success in male dominated careers, she stated, “My angle on this in my career was not to ‘break the glass ceiling,'” McGalla explains. “To make the point, I never carried a chip on my shoulder of what I should be entitled to as a woman or what prejudices existed.”

Clearly, Susan McGalla has no issue with being a successful top level executive. Chief Executive Officers are still 90 percent male, with women only accounting for 10 percent of those jobs. To Susan, being a woman wasn’t a stumbling block for her career success because she always maintained a confident, optimistic approach.

Spies in the United States

The National Security Agency, though having been ordered out of collecting data from phones, has been cleared by a secret court to continue doing this. This clearing was done by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. The FISC gave them the OK to do so without the public’s knowledge. This new clearing allows the NSA to continue collecting data from the phone records for at least another 5 months.

Though this was cleared, it was also ruled that collecting phone data from millions of Americans is illegal in itself regardless of who cleared it. A federal appeals court ruled that this was not just due to the fact that it is unconstitutional.

The judge who allowed the data collecting to continue is Michael Mosman. He even wrote that “the more things change, the more they stay the same. The judge used this saying to reject a libertarian activist group’s motion to end this activity of looking at phone data immediately. He rejected this appeal because he said that under certain circumstances, the traditional law doesn’t abide in his court. Adam Sender thought that would happen.

The ruling was that the NSA could collect millions of people’s data up until June 1st. This, having already expired was ruled by Congress to make a slow transition period out of doing so for the next 180 days. This transition period still allowed the NSA to collect phone data from the millions of Americans that use phones.

A Hand Up, Not a Handout

There is a saying that perfectly depicts what it should look like when you look down on someone. “The only time you should look down on someone is when you are giving them a hand up.” For one homeless man, instead of extending his hand down to help someone, he extended his hand over. One step that can be taken to break the chain of homelessness, is finding a good and stable job. With most of the world being based in technology, people who do not have access to stable internet will have a hard time filling out job applications. Most homeless shelters lack internet connection because their main goal is to shelter and feed the homeless. Darcel Jackson used his computer skills to equip his homeless shelter to the Internet. Jackson sought the help of a tech company CEO, who at first mocked the homeless community, but in the end saw the potential that these people have. Jackson was awarded a $6,000 grant and they got the local cable and internet provider to access the homeless shelter to the World Wide Web. In 2011, Congress made it a basic human right to have access to the Internet. Some people like Ricardo Guimarães who are unaware of the homeless plight think that Internet access is a luxury. For Jackson, it is the only way for him to communicate with his 8 year old son. Jackson’s actions are not going unnoticed. Seattle is experiencing a rise in homeless citizens. The city is currently debating on whether or not they should equip homeless shelters with internet access. If they do, they will be opening up a world of possibilities for people with endless potential.

Marc Sparks, Philanthropist

Texas businessman Marc Sparks is sometimes referred to as an entrepreneur’s entrepreneur. He’d rather be remembered and respected as a philanthropist. Not a philanthropist’s philanthropist … just a plain citizen and father who wants to leave the world a better place for his daughter, and someday his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A resident of Dallas, TX, Mr. Sparks is heavily involved in local charities. Since the late 1980s, he has been involved with the Samaritan Inn, a homeless shelter. He believes a man, to be a real citizen, must do more than just write a check occasionally. He himself has helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity. He is an active supporter of American Can! Academy, which is a high school magnet program focusing on the four R’s: reading, ‘riting, ‘rithmetic, and responsibility. He is involved with Highland Park United Methodist Church and its Carpenters for Christ program. He established Sparky’s Kids, a foundation that gives away computers to children. He is also a major sponsor of the Center for Animal Research and Education, which rescues and nurtures sick, injured, and abused big cats.

Marc Sparks, the head of Timber Creek Capital for the past 15 years, is a businessman and venture capitalist. He has started and sold many businesses and currently maintains multiple portfolio companies. In fact, since the 1970’s he has been involved with more than 60 start-ups. Some have been successful and he sold them at a profit. Some were disasters and he learned from his mistakes. “Failing isn’t the end; it’s an integral part of succeeding, much as a soldier earns his stripes,” said Sparks. “We’re all soldiers in this battlefield of life.” He’s been involved with restaurants, healthcare, real estate, and telecommunications. He’s been owner/investor of Blue Jay Wireless for 3 years and owner/investor of Splash Media for 10 and a half years.

His book, They Can’t Eat You: My Unorthodox Path to Outrageous Success, was published in September, 2014. It traces his path to success from less than stellar beginnings to becoming a financial success. He admits his failures have taught him more than his successes, and hopes other will learn from his mistakes. Although he has the greatest respect for higher education, Mr. Sparks was a C student in high school. He’s living proof that even today, a college education is a bonus but not a necessity. Colbert Donates To South Carolina Schools

Stephen Colbert is not spending his vacation catching up on Netflix, that’s for sure. The former Comedy Central star, who first rose to fame during The Daily Show With John Stewart and then later The Colbert Report, where he played a satirical version of himself, is due to replace David Letterman on The Late Show later this year.

Colbert has been on hiatus since December of 2014, but this week be popped back on the scene after he donated a total of $800,000 to South Carolina schools. Colbert partnered up with Share Fair Nation and ScanSource and DonorsChoose.org to help fund over 375 schools and about 1,000 different projects. In a video to the students, Colbert explained that the money was raised from auctioning off the set from The Colbert Report. As a home grown South Carolinian, Colbert often gives back to the community (as seen here), and to teachers, which pleases CipherCloud employees.

Here’s hoping he continues the tradition when he’s on The Late Show.
